Windlass 14th Century Longsword – German HRE Model

Royal Armouries Sword IX.1106 is a longsword catalogued as dating back to the 14th century and labeled as discovered in Lake Constance, where Germany, Switzerland, and Austria meet, a region that was once part of the Holy Roman Empire (HRE). In the 14th century, longswords like this were carried by armored men-at-arms and knights, who in battles such as Sempach in 1386 CE, sometimes fought on foot. 

Hand forged by Windlass Steelcrafts under license from Royal Amouries, this accurate replica reflects the form and handling characteristics of historical battlefield swords. Described as quite specialized for armored combat and half-swording, its straight, double-edged blade is made from 1080 high carbon and fully tempered. With bevelled but unsharpened edges, this flattened, diamond cross-section blade is distally tapering with an acute tip for proper weight distribution. Despite its obtuse edge geometry, the stiff and heavy blade has a lot of presence in the strike. 

This sword has a hand-and-a-half hilt which can be used one or two-handed. Its complex and subtly shaped wheel pommel with front and back planes that are uniquely canted inward at the top is weighty enough to be used effectively to strike in close combat. 

Its wooden sheath covered with leather has a brass chape reinforced tip with a traditional cut-out. At the throat, the leather extends upwards and covers part of the guard at the ricasso.
