Shadow Dancer Nova Black Phoenix Handguard Katana Usable for Cutting Practice

Perfect for sword enthusiasts who want a minimal and formidable masterpiece, this katana from Shadow Dancer’s Nova Series combines the best of modern design with impeccable traditional craftsmanship that focuses on precision and performance, making it a worthy addition to any collection.

Its shinogi zukuri (ridge line runs along the blade’s length on both sides) blade is forged from 9260 spring steel resulting in better resilience, flexibility, and shock resistance. Heat treated and oil quenched, the blade is then mirror polished for a highly reflective and flawless finish.

This katana’s koshirae include blackened brass fittings with gold highlights. The maru gata (round) sukashi (openwork) tsuba features a phoenix. Believed to appear only during times of peace and righteous rule, the phoenix also draws on the lore of Suzaku, 朱雀, the southern deity of the Four Cardinal Guardians known for its propriety. Meanwhile, the fuchi and kashira depict plum buds representing resilience, set against a seigaiha (waves) background. One of the oldest traditional patterns, the layered semi-circles create the impression of arching waves, symbolizing prosperity and good fortune. Other matching fittings are brass menuki, seppa, and habaki.

As tradition dictates, a single mekugi secures the blade’s full tang to the wooden Haichi style tsuka covered with white genuine samegawa and tightly wrapped tsukamaki using synthetic silk ito for a comfortable and durable grip.

This stunning katana is completed by a black matte scabbard with glossy black flecks, paired with an alloy shitodome and thickened sageo.
