The wakizashi was the secondary sidearm sword of the traditional samurai. This is a Modern Wakizashi made for the modern urban samurai who practices his cutting skills on various targets such as tatami mats. It comes with a Bohi, a traditionally made groove that balances the blade, makes it lighter, and produces a louder tachikaze (sound of slashing) to indicate when a perfect slash is executed.
The blade is built from 1566 high carbon steel, a material with the right balance between toughness and flexibility. It has undergone traditional genuine hardening by applying a clay mixture to the edge, which makes it harder at around 60 HRC, while the spine is 40 HRC, set just right for cutting. The result is a playful real hamon that dances across the edge, making it a true battle-ready blade.
Wakizashi are one-handed swords, and this is an accurate replica. It comes with a modern G10 scale handle which offers a strong non-slip grip. It features a silver dragon menuki (decorative handle ornament) and a double-pegged tang for added durability. The fittings are made of copper, and the sword comes with its very own wooden scabbard.
This modern wakizashi can be paired with the Modern Katana (SD35471) and Modern Tanto (SD35491) to create a perfect modern daisho setup.
Please note that the sageo (scabbard cord) might not be wrapped as shown in the pictures.
