Shadow Dancer Nova Red 1095 Dragonfly Cutter Katana

This luxurious and striking katana is from Shadow Dancer’s Nova Series, a culmination of impeccable traditional craftsmanship combined with the innovation of modern design. 

Its shinogi zukuri (ridge line runs along the blade’s length on both sides) blade is forged from 1095 steel, a material with ~0.95% carbon. After differential heat treatment and clay tempering, the blade has a superior ability to retain its extremely sharp edge, recommended for experienced cutting practitioners. Mirror polishing brings to life the jihada and choji (clove buds) hamon, giving the blade a reflective and flawless finish. 

Adding refinement to the sword’s design are high-quality koshirae with tonbo (dragonfly) motifs, including an iron maru gata (round) sukashi (openwork) tsuba, as well as brass fuchi, kashira, and menuki. Also known as the kachimushi, 勝虫 (victory insect) due to its aggressive and swift forward flight patterns without retreating, the dragonfly is highly revered as it represents tactical awareness and battlefield readiness. Complementing these are also brass seppa and habaki. 

One mekugi secures the blade’s nakago to the wooden Haichi style tsuka covered with white genuine samegawa. The handle is then tightly wrapped with synthetic silk ito for a durable and secure grip. 

Completing this beautiful sword is a stunning crimson oil lacquered saya with golden metallic mottled clusters, paired with brass shitodome and a thickened sageo.
