Shadow Dancer Shinogi Zukuri Tanto Sword Short Katana T10 Steel Handmade

In the Heian Period (794 - 1185 CE), samurai used the bow and tachi as primary weapons while the tanto served as a sidearm for samurai on horseback. During the chaotic Warring States Period, it was carried by samurai and ashigaru (foot soldiers). Even women of samurai households carried a specific version called a kaiken for self defense. As times transitioned to a relatively peaceful Edo Period (1603 - 1867 CE), the tanto became a ceremonial gift among nobility, traditional Japanese weddings, and in seppuku rituals. 

Shadow Dancer’s shinogi zukuri (ridge line runs along the blade’s length on both sides) tanto is forged from T10 steel, a Chinese high-carbon tool steel similar to 1095 steel but capable of better wear resistance. Differentially heat treated and clay tempered, the resulting gunome (waves) hamon is accentuated through mirror polishing for a smooth and flawless finish. A bohi on the blade trims off excess weight and moves its point of balance toward the hilt, improving the weapon’s handling and maneuverability. 

Mounted in the Hamidashi style, the intricately detailed smaller-than-usual tsuba provides some protection and a stop for the hand without the added bulk of a full-sized guard. Similar motifs are echoed on the other fittings including the fuchi, kashira, and menuki. Brass seppa and habaki complement the overall design. 

One mekugi secures the nakago within the wooden core tsuka, allowing for easy disassembly during maintenance. White genuine samegawa covers the handle with tightly wrapped tsukamaki using synthetic silk ito for a secure and durable grip. 

This tanto comes sheathed in a black oil lacquered saya fitted with a thickened sageo.
