Unlike dragons from the western culture, Japanese dragons are known for their control over the oceans, tides, and rain. The only mythical creature in the 12-year Japanese zodiac cycle, the Year of the Dragon, 辰年 (tatsu doshi) is highly auspicious and symbolic. 

This sophisticated and elegant Shadow Dancer limited edition katana commemorates the dragon year. Its shinogi zukuri (ridge line runs along the blade’s length on both sides) blade is forged from high carbon steel, undergoing differential heat treatment and clay tempering for an extremely well retained sharp edge. Traditional sashikomi polishing brings to life the blade’s jihada and hamon, maximizing the sword’s overall aesthetic appeal. 

High-quality brass fittings with an antiqued finish adorn this katana. The maru gata tsuba features a dragon winding through storm clouds above turbulent ocean waves, symbolizing nobility, strength, adaptability, and good fortune. Its ability to move seamlessly through the clouds and waves showcases its mastery and the harmony of different elements. The dragon motif is also echoed in the fuchi, kashira, and menuki. Brass seppa and habaki complement the sword’s design. 

One mekugi secures the full tang blade within the wooden Haich style tsuka. White samegawa covering the handle is then tightly wrapped in place using synthetic Japanese silk ito. Hishigami (folded paper wedges) additions prevent the ito from shifting and fraying, ensuring a solid and durable grip. 

This katana’s blade comes sheathed in a black glossy lacquered saya with horn koiguchi and kurigata, brass kojiri and shitodome, as well as a thickened sageo.
