PRODUCT DETAILS

Forged from crucible steel, this Shadow Dancer katana showcases a moroha zukuri (double edged) blade that underwent clay tempering and differential heat treatment to produce a keen edge while retaining a flexible spine for improved shock absorption. The integration of a bohi enhances the sword’s overall performance by decreasing its weight, improving its point of balance, and optimizing its tachikaze. Traditional sashikomi polishing brings life to the blade’s jihada and suguha (straight) hamon, adding to the sword’s overal visual appeal.

The blackened iron kikka sukashi (chrysanthemum openwork) tsuba carries deep cultural significance for several reasons. Originally introduced to Japan as a medicinal plant during the Nara period (648 - 781 CE), the chrysanthemum evolved into a talisman for health, survival, and longevity. Its radial symmetry resembling sun rays also led to its association with the sun goddess Amaterasu, the mythical ancestor of the imperial lineage. Consequently, the chrysanthemum crest was historically bestowed upon those who demonstrated supreme loyalty and service to the throne. Even today, the 16-petal chrysanthemum is the official Imperial Seal of Japan. Other premium koshirae include blackened brass ishime-ji (stone-textured) fuchi and kashira, along with copper seppa and habaki.

One mekugi secures the full tang blade to the wooden halves of the Haichi-style tsuka covered with white samegawa. The tight katetemaki (battle-style) wrap uses Japanese-imported kapok (cotton-silk) ito for a secure and durable grip.

Last but not least is the stunning saya with horn fittings, brass shitodome, and Japanese-imported synthetic silk sageo.
