DragonFly Katana (Katateuchi)

A katateuchi is a traditional Japanese sword with characteristics similar to the katana. however, the main difference comes from its intention to be wielded with one hand as opposed to the katana which is wielded with both hands.

Shadow Dancer's DragonFly Katana (Katateuchi) allows it to be wielded with one or both hands. Featuring a shinogi zukuri (curved with yokote and shinogi close to the mune) blade forged from crucible steel, the differentially heat treated blade is extremely durable, has excellent edge retention, and showcases a sanbonsugi (resembling a cluster of three cedar trees) hamon made even more prominent through Sashikomi polishing. The blade of this sword also has a bohi that helps to lighten the overall weight of the sword and improve its point of balance.

As the name of this sword implies, it comes equipped with a hand finished iron maru gata (round or circular) tsuba with a dragonfly or tonbo motif, as they were revered for being fearless, swift, and courageous. Other high quality fittings also have a dragonfly motif detailed in gold on the brass fuchi and kashira; brass menuki; copper seppa and Yujo style habaki.

A mekugi secures the blade to the wooden Haichi style tsuka covered with white rayskin with common emperor nodes held in place with silk tsuka ito. This sword is completed by a scabbard with buffalo horn fittings (koiguchi, kojiri, kurigata), brass shitodome, and sageo.
