Higonokami – Buffalo Horn Handle

The Higonokami is a type of folding pocket knife that first originated in Japan in 1896, invented as smiths struggled after the abolishment of the samurai class. As the demand for swords declined, metal workers diversified into tools and knives.

While the general idea remains, Citadel's Higonokami is slightly distinct from the others. Forged from DNH7 high carbon steel and differentially hardened, the blade is durable, resilient, and has excellent edge retention.

What is unique about this version is the replacement of the typical brass handle with buffalo horn which has a recess, carved to fit the blade. The use of buffalo horn keeps the knife light and easy to carry. With some practice, the blade can be unfolded with one hand. It then continues to stay open, held in place by the forged tang extension.

For safety purposes, the fairly tight pivot of this knife is peened in place to prevent it from opening while in the pocket. This Higonokami is completed with the addition of a copper lanyard tube at the handle and a nylon zipper storage pouch embroidered with Citadel's logo.

Note that DNH7 high carbon steel blades require cleaning and maintenance to keep it in top shape.
