PRODUCT DETAILS

The ninjas were spies and assassins of feudal Japan, known for the elusiveness. Most of what is known today are based on the preserved scrolls of the Sengoku Period (1467-1600). The two known ninja clans are the Kouga and Iga, neighboring villages that became enemies. With many Koga ninja fighting on Oda Nobunaga's side, the Iga ninja were faced with overwhelming numbers and were defeated. The Koga ninja later played a role in the Battle of Sekigahara and Siege of Osaka.

To commemorate these warring ninja families, Hanwei's Kouga ninjato has a blade forged from 1566 high carbon steel, a material containing substantial manganese. After differential quenching and clay tempering, the blade has a uniformed hardened microstructure, creating a tough blade that holds its edge remarkably well. The blade's edge has an estimated hardness of 60HRC.

This ninjato is equipped with a blackened iron tate itomaki gata (vertical itomaki shape) tsuba featuring the Kouga's Mon and pierced Kanji. This theme carries over to the fuchi and kashira. The tsuka of this unique sword is covered with black same and wrapped with black tsuka ito. The Kouga's Mon and Kanji are also featured on the blackened fittings of the spiked saya.
