Synthetic Cutlass Sparring Sword

The cutlass is a short single-edged blade commonly used as a naval weapon during the Age of Sail, in service from the 17th to early 20th centuries by sailors, pirates, and privateers. Its compact size suited the cramped fighting of boarding actions, in the ship’s lower decks, and the rigging. 

Besides combat, the cutlass’ robust blade also doubled as a utility tool to cut through heavy rope and thick canvas. Historically, it was even carried by the Royal Navy, US Navy, and London’s Metropolitan Police. 

Designed for sparring and drilling, Red Dragon Armoury’s Synthetic Cutlass Sparring Sword has a blade made from a special blend of high impact polymer. Its basket hilt guard, made of purpose-blended performance plastic, is described by the manufacturer as virtually indestructible in normal use and is large enough to accommodate padded gloves.

Rubber-like thermoplastic elastomer grips provide a tight fit on the blade’s tang, designed to absorb the impact of strikes. Meanwhile, the basket hilt pommel is made from a blend of polymer and powdered metal, increasing the weight of the pommel beyond what polymer alone could provide.

Fully made in the United Kingdom, this sword which Red Dragon describes as based on real historical designs is approved by the Boars Tooth Fight School.
