PRODUCT DETAILS

Spears were the most popular as they took the least amount of iron to make. Elaborate patterns on various weapons would be created using the "Niello" process. This uses an alloy of several metals such as copper, sulphur, lead, and silver, which is then rubbed into the engraved patterns and fired. Once the alloy hardens and cools, the blackened remains are polished to reveal a bright finish.

Hanwei's decorated short bladed spearhead is a prime example of the Viking's creativity in terms of art and war. Forged from steel, each spearhead has a shaft diameter of 1". Short spearheads is typical of those with Celtic origin, imported into Scandinavia. These shorter spearheads are stiffer and therefore more resistant to breaking or bending, improving its ability to pierce through body armor of the period. While the Vikings use the Niello process, Hanwei uses a simpler technique that still provides the same lustrous and permanent Niello-like effect.

Note that this listing is only for the spearhead. Since it is cast hollow, it is ideal for collection or display purposes only as it is not suitable for functional use.
