Shadow Dancer Nagamaki/Katana Crucible Steel Clay Temper

Originating during Japan’s Nanbokuchō period (1336 - 1392 CE), the nagamaki is believed to have developed when warriors wrapped the lower part of nodachi (field swords) to extend their grip for better leverage and control. As battlefield tactics shifted, many blades were shortened and remounted into maneuverable long swords, producing the nagamaki-naoshi blade profile, whose hallmarks are still carried by blades like this Shadow Dancer sword today. 

Combining beauty and lethality, its nagamaki zukuri (typically minimally tapering without transitional line separating blade’s body from tip) blade is forged from 1095 steel, prized for its keen edge which retains remarkably well. A premium bohi reduces weight and shifts the point of balance nearer to the handle, improving the sword’s agility. Differentially heat treated and clay tempered, the blade showcases a radiant midare (irregular) hamon accentuated through hand polishing. 

Premium koshirae for this piece includes a blackened brass maru gata (round) tsuba, fuchi, kashira, and menuki with cherry blossom motifs, symbolizing the transience of life, renewal, hope, prosperity, and spiritual purity. Gold-toned brass seppa and habaki add color and a luxurious touch to the sword’s profile.

For maximum security, the full tang blade is double-pegged to the wooden Haichi style tsuka covered with white genuine samegawa while the tight tsukamaki uses Japanese-imported cotton ito. 

 A crimson glossy oil lacquered saya with brass shitodome and thickened sageo completes this masterpiece.
