PRODUCT DETAILS

This Raptor Katana from Hanwei is a formidable yet sophisticated piece. Designed under the auspices of James William, a cutting master, it was then crafted by Paul Chen for practitioners who wants to perfect their cutting technique. This katana features a full tang shobu zukuri blade, a shape similar to a shinogi zukuri, but without a yokote while the shinogi ji drops off towards the mine. This design became popular in the Nanbokucho era, with its popularity continuing into the Muromachi period.

This blade of this katana is forged from 5160 spring steel, known for its flexibility, resilience, shock absorption, and excellent edge retention. These properties are due to the trace levels of chromium, silicon, and manganese, making it a favorite among many reputable swordsmiths including Tinker Pearce and Angus Trim.

As its name implies, the tsuba features a raptor, a motif that is also reflected on the fuchi and kashira. This design also carries over to the gold colored habaki, seppa, and menuki with a design of bird feathers. The tsuka is first inlaid with white same and wrapped with black tsuka ito. The katana is then sheathed in a saya with black sageo.
