Hanwei's Koi Katana is a highly unique piece that is both elegant and eye-catching. Using the classic contrasting colors of black and white, this katana has a full tang blade forged from T10 high carbon tool steel. This alloy has properties similar to 1095 steel but with the added advantage of silicon to improve strength and edge retention. Differentially treated and clay tempered, this blade displays a vibrant midareba hamon, enhancing the appearance of the katana.
As expected, the iron tsuba features a finely rendered Koi, detailed intricately on both the front and back. The fittings are given an antique look to add to the aesthetics of the piece. The tsuka is covered in black same before using white premium Japanese cotton as the tsuka ito. The katana comes sheathed in a deep black lacquered saya with black and white striped cotton sageo.
The inspiration of the design comes from the Koi fish that is said to swim up rivers and climb waterfalls with bravery, just like a samurai is expected to. Once caught, the Koi is similar to the Japanese warrior, believed to lay still beneath the knife, facing its death with courage.
Besides the Koi Katana, Hanwei also offers a matching wakizashi for those who desire a complete collection.
