Shadow Dancer Nova Brown Clay Tempered Katana with Snake Fittings

This distinguished and stately looking katana is Shadow Dancer’s Snake katana from their Nova Series, blending contemporary modern designs with traditional precision, making it a valuable addition for any enthusiast.

The meticulously crafted shinogi zukuri (ridge line runs along the blade’s length) blade is forged from 1095 carbon steel, differentially heat treated to produce an exceptionally keen and sharp edge that holds up remarkably well, especially for experienced cutting practitioners. The beauty of the blade is further accentuated by a stunning sanbonsugi (reminiscent of three cedar trees) hamon made even more visible through mirror polishing.

As its name implies, this katana is equipped with brass fittings featuring hebi, 蛇 (snakes), as well as gold-toned seppa and habaki. Unlike Western traditions which often view the serpent with malice, snakes are revered in Japanese folklore, carrying deep spiritual, symbolic, and historical appeal as they are often seen as divine messengers for Benzaiten (goddess of music, fluidity, and luck) and Suijin (Water God).

As fine metalwork evolved in the Edo period, schools such as the Hamano, Yoshioka, and Goto began crafting hyperrealistic snake motifs on koshirae. The ability to shed their skin is seen as a symbol of self-renewal, longevity, and regeneration. Meanwhile, the snake’s nature reminds the warrior of patience, stealth, speed, and striking with precision.

A single mekugi secures the blade’s tang to the wooden core Haichi style tsuka covered in black genuine samegawa and tightly wrapped using synthetic leather ito for a comfortable and secure grip. This majestic piece comes sheathed in a glossy oil lacquered saya with patterns that resemble a snake’s body, paired with alloy shitodome and a thickened sageo.
