PRODUCT DETAILS

This Raptor Katana by Hanwei is unique from the other Raptor Series of Katana due to its blade design. The Nanbokucho period (1336 - 1392) marked a time where there was an ideological struggle between those who believe in creating a military regime modeled after Kamakura, and those who wanted the Emperor back in power. During this time, the outbreak of civil war and internal conflicts throughout almost six decades led to the evolution of Japanese swords. Longer and wider blades emerged with the Odachi being one of the more notable creations.

Named after the era it was created, this katana has a Nanbokucho Zukuri style blade with a blade length of 30" and long kissaki. Despite being designed for heavy targets, it is surprisingly nimble and agile, allowing its wielder to master double cuts. Forged from 5160 high carbon spring steel, this material is favored by many expert swordsmiths due to the presence of chromium, silicon, and manganese. This results in a full tang blade that is resilient, flexible, has excellent edge retention, and shock absorbing properties.

Like its peers in the Raptor Series, it is fitted with a maru gata (round) tsuba depicting a raptor, a theme that is also seen in the fuchi and kashira. In line with the design, the gold colored menuki depicts bird feathers. The tsuka for this katana is covered in white same and the tsukamaki uses black tsuka ito. The overall look is completed with a black lacquered saya with black sageo.
