PRODUCT DETAILS

Bonji, 梵字, meaning “Brahma’s characters” is an ancient Sanskrit alphabet that originated in India (circa 6th century CE). Although it was gradually replaced in India by Nagari scripts, it took root in Japan after the monk Kūkai returned from China in 806 CE with hundreds of volumes of texts. A single bonji character acts as a shuji, 種字, a seed syllable that stands for a deity and their essence. This led to its addition to various sword mountings and horimono (blade engravings), where it serves as a talisman, an invocation of a deity, and can also be a reminder to have a calm and resolute mind even in the face of death.

Inspired by history, this Z-Sey katana features premium cupronickel koshirae with bonji characters, as seen on its mokko gata (lobed shape) tsuba, fuchi, kashira, and menuki. Copper seppa and habaki complement the other fittings.

Its shinogi zukuri (ridge line runs along the blade’s length on both sides) blade forged from tamahagane steel is differentially heat treated and clay tempered, revealing a beautiful jihada and elegant gunome (waves) hamon, accentuated through traditional sashikomi A++ polishing by hand. This highest level of polishing is done by specialists who use oil and stone to meticulously bring out maximum detail, depth, and contrast from the grain and temper line, enhancing the blade’s aesthetic appeal.

A mekugi secures the nakago between the two halves of the wooden handmade Haichi style tsuka. White samegawa with a large emperor node covers the handle, providing structural reinforcement and friction to prevent the tightly wrapped Japanese silk ito from slipping. High quality hishigami (folded paper wedges) add volume and anchor the wrap in place, ensuring the grip is solid and durable.

A black ishime-nuri, 黑石目塗り  (stone-textured lacquer) saya with horn fittings (koiguchi, kurigata, kojiri), cupronickel shitodome, and Japanese silk sageo completes this masterpiece.
