Shadow Dancer 9260 Steel Wakizashi (Naginata Blade Shape)

The naginata is a Japanese polearm weapon once used as a long sweeping weapon against enemy horses and samurai. Sohei (warrior monks) also used it to protect temples and fight in civil wars. As Japan progressed towards the more peaceful Edo period, onna musha (women of the samurai class) used it to defend their homes as it allowed them to maintain a safer distance against intruders. 

As these weapons became increasingly obsolete, the blades were shortened or reshaped into katana or wakizashi (naginata naoshi). New swords were also purposely made to have the naginata’s blade shape as its geometry offered combat advantages such as improved agility and slashing ability, as seen in this Shadow Dancer wakizashi. 

Forged from 9260 steel, the heat treated and oil quenched naginata (polearm blade style) zukuri blade features a premium bohi which takes off excess weight, shifts the point of balance closer to the hilt, and minimizes surface drag. Combined with the absence of a yokote (ridge line separating the blade’s body from the tip), it reduces surface resistance, allowing an uninterrupted, slicing plane to excel at precision thrusting and sweeping cuts. 

This sword showcases an iron sukashi (openwork) Yaguruma (arrow-wheel) tsuba, symbolizing stability, guidance, and unwavering determination. Due to its connection to archery, it was adopted as a family crest, the most notable being the Yagyū Clan famed for their legendary swordspeople and official instructors to the Tokugawa Shogunate (Japan’s ruling family during the Edo Period). Other premium fittings include brass fuchi, kashira, menuki, seppa, and habaki.

One mekugi secures the full tang blade to the wooden Haichi style tsuka, covered with white genuine samegawa, and wrapped tightly using synthetic tsuka ito. Optional hishigami or hishigami pro upgrades further solidifies the grip, ensuring a longer lasting handle with improved edge alignment feedback. 

Sheathing the blade is a black matte oil lacquered saya paired with brass shitodome and a thickened sageo.
