Hanwei's Practical Plus Elite Katana is part of the Performance Series of Swords, a line that emphasizes on premium quality swords at an affordable price, making it ideal for practitioners who use it for cutting practice.
Forged from 1566 high carbon steel, the substantial manganese content in the material results in a largely uniformed hardened microstructure after differential heat treatment and clay tempering. This produces a blade that is tough and holds an excellent edge despite extended use. An added advantage is the beautiful hamon that accentuates the beauty of the piece.
Like the other Practical Katanas in the series, this one is also equipped with a kikka gata (chrysanthemum shaped) iron tsuba with a sunburst design, fuchi and kashira with Japanese Dogwood motif, a gold colored menuki featuring a dragon, and a brass habaki. The full tang blade is double pegged to the tsuka for extra stability. Meanwhile, the tsuka is first covered with genuine white same and uses a tightly woven black cotton as the tsuka ito.
Completing the overall design of the katana is the addition of a black lacquered saya with black sageo.
