Shadow Dancer Silver Waves Katateuchi – One Handed Katana Sword

This remarkable piece from Shadow Dancer has a shinogi zukuri (ridge line runs along the blade’s length on both sides) blade forged from crucible steel, a material prized for its ability to visually resemble tamahagane blades. The differential heat treatment and clay tempering process brings out the jihada and subtle sanbonsugi (reminiscent of three cedar trees) hamon, further accentuated through traditional sashikomi polishing. A bohi takes off any excess weight without compromising the blade’s structure while also moving its point of balance toward the hilt, improving the sword’s performance in terms of agility and maneuverability. 

True to its name, this katana’s high-quality cupronickel fittings feature high-relief turbulent waves, as seen on its mokko gata (lobed shape) tsuba, fuchi, kashira, and menuki. Miyamoto Musashi, Japan’s greatest sword saint, mentions in his Book of Five Rings (Go Rin no Sho) that the Water Element is fluid, calm, and able to adopt the shape of the container. Depicted with fine-lined textures and raised droplets of sea spray, this cresting waves motif symbolizes momentum and power, reminding warriors of water’s nature to conform, yet able to break through solid rock. Cupronickel habaki and silver-toned seppa complement the design. 

A mekugi secures the nakago to the wooden core Haichi style tsuka covered in white genuine samegawa with tightly wrapped tsukamaki using synthetic silk ito for a durable and secure grip. 

Completing this piece is a stunning glossy black lacquered saya with iridescent fragments and needles scattered throughout the finish, evoking the depths of the ocean. The scabbard is fitted with cupronickel shitodome and a thickened sageo.
