Z-SEY Tamahagane Katana Blade (鹤波拵)

This Z-Sey katana has a shinogi zukuri (ridge line runs along the blade’s length on both sides) blade forged from tamahagane steel. The differential heat treatment and clay tempering process yields an elegant suguha (straight) hamon accentuated through traditional sashikomi A ++ polishing by hand. This highest grade of polish is performed by specialists to bring out maximum depth, detail, and contrast in the grain and temper line. 

Premium cupronickel fittings with intricate carvings adorn the katana. The mokko gata (lobed shape) tsuba depicts a crane in flight over turbulent waves. In Japanese folklore, cranes are believed to be divine messengers who live for a thousand years, making them a talisman for longevity and health. Their nature to mate for life also makes them symbols of devotion and loyalty. 

Besides the tsuba, turbulent waves are also seen on the fuchi, kashira, and menuki, symbolizing raw power that cannot be contained. Since water changes seamlessly to fit any terrain, they also remind warriors about the importance of fluidity and resilience. 

Together, the serene crane gliding above churning seas evokes Fudōshin, 不動心, the “immovable mind” where one remains completely composed in the midst of chaos. Cupronickel seppa and habaki round out the sword’s design. 

One mekugi secures the nakago between the two halves of the handmade wooden Haichi style tsuka. The handle is then covered with white samegawa with a large emperor node, while the tightly wrapped tsukamaki uses Japanese black leather. High quality hishigami (folded paper wedges) inserted beneath the ito add volume and lock the ito in place, ensuring the grip remains solid, durable, and comfortable. 

Completing this masterpiece is a handmade half wrapped samegawa saya fitted with horn koiguchi and kurigata, nami (wave) themed cupronickel kojiri, cupronickel shitodome, and black Japanese silk sageo.
