Shadow Dancer Nova 1095 Cream/Brown Katana with Singing Samurai Saya

This elegant piece with deep symbolism is part of Shadow Dancer’s Nova Series which blends fantasy-inspired designs with traditional craftsmanship.

Its 1095 carbon steel kanmuriotoshi zukuri (translating to “crown drop-off,” referring to the distinctive tapering from the blade’s back toward the tip) blade with the addition of a bohi results in a lightweight design with enhanced performance. This agile and exceptionally sharp blade capable of quick maneuvers also undergoes a differential heat treatment process, revealing a stunning sanbonsugi (reminiscent of three cedar trees) hamon which is mirror polished, accentuating the katana’s aesthetics and matching the overall theme. 

The blackened brass fittings with gold highlights have auspicious motifs. The tsuba features a three-clawed dragon. Although it represents a lower ranking official in Chinese mythology, it is the traditional representation in Japanese lore, symbolizing power, protection, and wisdom. The word 善 (zen) is also embossed on the tsuba, serving as a reminder of righteousness, goodness, and virtue. Meanwhile, floral motifs set against a seigaiha (blue ocean waves) background on the fuchi and kashira represent resilience, peace, and good fortune. Brass menuki, seppa, and habaki complement the katana’s koshirae.

A single mekugi secures the full tang blade to the wooden Haichi-style tsuka covered in white genuine samegawa bound tightly using black synthetic leather ito in the katatemaki style. This piece is completed by a glossy oil lacquered scabbard featuring a warrior and the word 侍 (samurai), paired with an alloy shitodome and thickened sageo.
