PRODUCT DETAILS

Forged from 9260 steel, this Shadow Dancer katana’s moroha zukuri (double edged) blade has  impressive flexibility and shock resistance. A bohi helps take off any excess weight without affecting the blade’s structural integrity. Heat treated and oil quenched, the blade is machine polished for a clean and uniform finish.

This katana comes equipped with a brass kikka gata (chrysanthemum shape) tsuba with radiating fluted ribs and a three-clawed dragon. While the number of claws on Chinese and Korean dragons denote social rank, the three-clawed dragon remains as Japan’s tradition, symbolizing wisdom, protection, and strength. Meanwhile, the brass fuchi, kashira, and menuki feature waves with cresting tips, capturing the relentless power of the ocean, representing continuity and adaptability. Other complementing koshirae are brass seppa and habaki.

The nakago is secured within the wooden Haichi style tsuka with one mekugi. White genuine samegawa covers the handle, acting as both a structural and functional layer. Soaked and wrapped around the tsuka, the samegawa then starts to shrink and harden as it dries, compressing the handle and ensuring its stability. Additionally, it also acts as a protective layer against moisture and oils. The dense nodes on the ray skin also provide friction, preventing the tsuka ito from shifting and loosening.

Synthetic silk ito is then used for the tightly wrapped tsukamaki. Optional upgrades of hishigami (folded paper wedges) or hishigami pro further prevent slipping, add volume and comfort, as well as distribute tension for a solid and longer lasting grip.

A black oil lacquered saya fitted with alloy shitodome and a thickened sageo completes the overall ensemble.
