Dragonfly Folded Steel Katana

Bugei Sword’s Dragonfly Katana is the epitome of elegance and beauty, showcasing topnotch artisanship and design. 

This masterpiece’s shinogi zukuri (ridge line runs along the blade’s length on both sides) blade is forged from a blend of T10 and 1055 high carbon steel—a combination that reveals a stunning jihada (grain pattern). The differential heat treatment process to ensure a sharp edge and more flexible spine also yields a striking gunome (wave-like) hamon that enhances the katana’s overall appearance. The addition of a bohi on the blade reduces the sword’s weight while improving its point of balance and accentuating the clarity of its tachikaze. 

Fitted with premium sword mountings that are simple yet sophisticated, the blackened maru gata (round) tsuba features a copper-toned dragonfly in intricate detail. In accordance to its theme, this motif is also reflected in the katana’s fuchi, kashira, and menuki, giving it cohesive harmony throughout its design. In Japanese culture, the dragonfly is regarded as the victory insect due to its exclusively forward flight patterns. For this reason, the tonbo (dragonfly) on Japanese swords represents the warrior’s courage and strength, serving as a reminder of unwavering resolve. 

Two mekugi secures the blade’s full tang to the wooden core hilt covered in black samegawa and wrapped tightly using silk tsuka ito for a comfortable and durable grip. Completing this masterpiece is a black glossy lacquered katana and a matching sageo.
