Hanwei's Lion Dog Katana is an elegant piece with a full tang o-kissaki blade forged from HWS-1S carbon steel, a material exclusive to Hanwei. Made in Paul Chen's new factory using state of the art equipment, this proprietary blend is known for its resilience, toughness, and incredible edge retention. Besides these advantages, the blade is also highly resistant to abrasion. Differentially treated and clay tempered, this blade has an impressive o-choji (cloves) hamon.
As its name implies, the katana is equipped with a blackened iron naga maru gata (oval) tsuba depicting a lion-dog motif along with matching fuchi and kashira. The gold colored menuki features a peony, symbolizing bravery, honor, and prosperity. Meanwhile, the tsuka is inlayed with white same and wrapped tightly with black tsuka ito. The katana comes sheathed with a black gloss-lacquered saya with a ribbed section at the koiguchi and kurigata while the rest is spatter-lacquered to accentuate the aesthetics of the sword. The color for the premium hand woven sageo may vary.
